Small-area estimates of MSM population sizes

Emory CAMP has partnered with CDC scientists in the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) and the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) to produce estimates of the number of men who have sex with men (MSM) in US states, counties, and metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The burden of HIV and STDs is disproportionately high among MSM, and these population estimates are intended to be an additional tool for public health practitioners and policy planners. To improve use of these population estimates, the resources on this page include manuscripts detailing the methodology used and an application of the estimates to examine HIV diagnoses among MSM; national and regional slide decks that provide an overview of MSM populations in the United States; state-level MSM profiles, which include information on MSAs; and the county-level MSM data.
